Community Service Awards

Honoring Community Impact

Every year, City Market recognizes an individual for their outstanding contribution to our community at our annual Member Meeting. Nominations for the Community Service Award, presented in Honor of Don Schramm, are submitted by community members and are determined by the Co-op's Board of Directors in evaluating their positive impact in our community.

Nominations are now closed

Thanks for your submissions for our 2026 Community Service Award! The winner will be announced at our annual Member Meeting in September and receive a gift card and gifts from local partners.

Award Recipients

2025 Bianka Cimrin

Bianka received this award for her profound, tangible impact on the Burlington community through her commitment to public health, equity, and fostering a healthier environment for everyone through her service with Burlington Partnership for a Healthy Community (BPHC), Burlington’s Board of Health, and as a former Burlington City Council member. Thank you to Bianka for all her impactful work in our community!

2024 Samuel Dingba

Samuel Dingba is the Youth Program Coordinator with AALV, where he engages and supports young people ages 14-24 with programming at the O.N.E Youth Center.

We commend his commitment to AALV’s mission to reduce the disproportionate amount of minority youth that enter the juvenile justice system, and thank him for his positive impact in our community.

2023 Jayna Ahsaf

Jayna is a leader in Vermont who is organizing a transformative prison abolition movement in the state with the organization Free Her. Jayna partners with community groups throughout local jurisdictions and national organizations to ensure that all voices are heard in the move to de-carceration.

Her passion for the movement and motivation to work with everyone demonstrates her positive impact in our community.

2022 Susyn Dees

In the three years Susyn Dees has volunteered with Age Well, she has donated 713 hours of her time — delivering Meals on Wheels, accompanying clients to doctor's visits, and helping with groceries, sometimes doing the shopping herself. She goes above and beyond to say yes whenever Age Well calls.

Clients consistently describe Susyn as supportive and attentive, especially at medical appointments, where she arrives prepared with a notebook so clients can refer back to her notes later. Her gentle, caring nature creates a judgment-free space that puts people at ease and helps her build relationships quickly — making clients feel like they truly have someone in their corner.

Susyn's work with Age Well represents a truly outstanding commitment to our community.

2021 FaRied Munarsyah

FaRied has worked tirelessly to help coordinate the People’s Kitchen out of the Vermont Workers' Center — a group dedicated to providing nutritious food at low or no cost to our community. We want to highlight his hard work in starting this project in 2011 and keeping it running and expanding as needs change.

Historically, the People's Kitchen has risen to the occasion at events such as May Day celebrations, the UVM nurses strike, and the Black Lives Matter movement in Battery Park. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the group expanded further, coordinating farm stands with fresh produce free of charge for community members.

FaRied and volunteers have coordinated this project out of various community and home kitchens, manifesting co-op principles by creating access to healthy (and delicious!) food and a community that every citizen can rely on.

2020 Ashley Laporte

Ashley Laporte is a Steering Committee Member of the Vermont Racial Justice Alliance and the Director of Integrated Marketing at Seventh Generation. As a person of color born and raised in Vermont, she understands firsthand the contradictions that exist in our community around race.

At this tenuous moment in our history, Ashley has courageously stepped up to confront the systems and structures that perpetuate systemic racism in our city and state — organizing rallies to amplify Black voices and staying up countless hours to share her life experiences in public comment and testimony at city council meetings and at the state level on race and police reform.

In the rawest of moments and the most fraught times, Ashley is dedicated to equity in our community.

2019 Dr. Janet Carscadden

Since 2012, Dr. Janet Carscadden has volunteered countless hours planning and organizing the Old North End Community Dinner — a monthly free meal open to all, served prior to the Neighborhood Planning Assembly for wards 2 and 3. She has made this event a staple of the community, adding an international theme to each mostly local and organic meal.

Janet is also the owner of Evolution Physical Therapy and Yoga Studio, which she founded in 2006 to make yoga accessible to everyone and to share the benefits of therapeutic practice. She lectures throughout New England on the Science of Yoga and trains healthcare providers in yoga's therapeutic benefits.
