Letter from the Board President
As this article is written, the Board is wrapping up the final edits to the Co-op’s By-Laws which we have been revising over the past year. By the time you receive this newsletter, we will be setting the date of our spring meeting, at which we will be presenting our proposed revised By-Laws!
Our By-Laws were last revised in 2000, and much has changed since then. To bring our By-Laws in line with the current reality of the Cooperative, we’ve been working hard to develop a new version. We’ve worked with consultants who specialize in cooperative by-laws, sought legal counsel, and diligently compared our current By-Laws with best practice recommendations. We’ve welcomed members to our meetings and each month for the last year some members of the Cooperative have seen the revision process in action. In addition, we have sought feedback from opinion leaders in the Cooperative. We believe these proposed changes will support the Cooperative as it stands today: a 16,000 square foot downtown community-owned grocery store, doing $30 million in sales, with 3,000 customers a day, and with over 6,000 members.
Please join us to learn more! We’ve scheduled a Q & A session on Monday, April 25th at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the proposed changes with members. This session takes place on a regular Board meeting night and we’ll have light refreshments available while we talk.
And we’ll soon announce the date of our Spring Member Meeting, at which we’ll present the revisions. You’ll also receive notice of the voting process, as always, so that you can make an informed decision. To ensure everyone has access to the proposed changes, our current By-Laws and the proposed new By-Laws will be posted on our website, available at the usual voting booth in Aisle 1 during the voting period, and available as a handout at the Customer Service desk.
As always, our Board meetings are open to the public, and you are welcome to contact Board members with questions or concerns.
Happy spring!
Susan Munkres
Board President
