Advice From The Aisles: Winter Skin Care
By Madeline Desautels, Wellness Department
Winter is coming! And your down jackets and wool sweaters shouldn’t be the only thing getting thicker this winter. Your face moisturizer should also be thickening up to help protect you against these bitter winter months. But don’t fear - the Wellness Department is here (until 10pm)! Below we have listed some facial moisturizers you could use depending on your skin type.
Normal Skin: When trying to find a moisturizer for normal skin you want to consider using something that is a cream versus a lotion. Products with a cream base tend to moisturize better than a lotion in the colder months, and normal skin is capable of tolerating this without becoming overly oily. A couple good options are Acure’s Day Cream and Welda’s Renewing Day Cream. The Acure Day Cream has both gotu kola stem cells and chlorella. The combination of the two may “help your skin fight environmental damage and free radicals” which is exactly what you’re looking for throughout the winter. The Welda Day Cream helps to soften fine lines and aid with dry skin issues which we as we all know when it gets colder our skin becomes drier.
Dry Skin: Depending on how dry your skin is, you could either use a healing ointment, an oil based cream, or a face oil. If you have particularly dry skin, a thicker cream or balm is going to work best for you. A few options are Wild Hill’s Replenishing Face Cream, Vermont Herb’s Daily Herbal Skin Cream and Badger’s Beauty Balm. The Replenishing Face Cream by Wild Hill is a rich, light weight, hydrating cream and is especially good for dry, sensitive, aging skin and wrinkles. This stuff is thick but gets absorbed into your skin quickly, so there’s no oily residue. It’s basically the bee’s knees if you have dry winter skin (and want to soften up any wrinkles). Next up on our list is Healing Earth’s Daily Herbal Skin Cream. This product is thick and ultra-moisturizing. Once again, this is a great option for dry skin and absorbs fairly quickly but it does leave a bit of a residue which is good for an all-day moisturizing feel. Lastly, we have Badger’s beauty balm and if you have dry patchy skin, this product will do the trick. It’s an ultra-thick balm, with an ointment feel, that will make your skin glisten for all day protection.
Oily Skin: You may think that because you have oily skin you do not need to moisturize but that is not the case. If your skin does not have water based hydration, it will push out more oil to compensate for the water loss. We have some very specific moisturizers for oily skin. A couple options are Acure’s Oil Control Facial Moisturizer and Suki’s Balancing Day Lotion. Acure’s Oil Control Moisturizer claims to be an easily absorbed facial moisturizer that improves texture and tone. It has lilac stem cells which promotes balance and chlorella which helps your skin naturally rejuvenate. Suki’s Balancing Day Lotion is a lightweight moisturizer that is good for people struggling with overly active problem skin. In other words, oily skin.
Sensitive Skin: For those with sensitive skin we recommend a product that has a calming effect. During the winter, these calming properties will also help your skin deal with the bitter Vermont temperatures. Luckily for you, we carry a multitude of these products and some of which include Burt’s Bees sensitive Daily Moisturizing Cream, Welda’s Sensitive Facial Lotion, and Acure’s Sensitive Facial Cream. We’ll start off with Acure’s sensitive facial cream. It’s fragrance free and made with organic chamomile (which soothes the skin) and sunflower amino acids (which helps alleviate dryness). This is an all-in-one cream that can be used both day and night for people that have even the most sensitive skin. Next up we have Welda’s Sensitive Face Lotion which has almond and plum kernel oil that is soothing, gentle and fragrance-free. Lastly, we have Burt’s Bee’s Sensitive Daily Moisturizing Cream. Not only is it fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and allergy tested but it’s also dermatologist tested. It is clinically proven to moisturize sensitive skin without causing any irritation or dryness. This cream also has cotton extract to soften, rice extract to moisturize and aloe to sooth. This lotion is basically the all-in-one for all your sensitive skin needs.
Mature Skin: There are many different types of mature skin and the common need is an anti-aging property. We have a plethora of options for you which include Jason’s Crème, Andalou’s Beautiful Day Cream, and Rebecca’s Makes Sense Eleventh Hour Anti-Aging Face Cream. First off, we have Jason’s Crème. This jar is equipped with ester C, vitamin C, thioctic acid, vitamin E and green tea, which help minimize the effects of aging, reducing free radical damage and leaves your skin feeling softer and rejuvenated. Next up we have Rebecca’s Makes Sense Anti-Aging Face Cream. This cream contains high concentrations of vitamins A, B, C, D, E & K as well as essential fatty acids, antioxidants and much more. It claims to help with a multitude of things including decreasing the visibility of fine lines, wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, skin redness and scarring while also protecting you against free radicals. Lastly, we have Andalou’s Beautiful Day Cream. This little guy has rose and fruit stem cells which boost cell vitality, improve resilience and counteract aging as well as aloe vera to help soothe the skin.
