Beer and Wine July E-Newsletter: Brewery of the Month
By Joey Bowling, Beer and Wine Manager
Groennfell Meadery, Colchester, begun in late 2013 by Kelly and Ricky Klein, two Middlebury College grads with a love for the world’s oldest fermented beverage. Who knows how long this concoction has been being brewed by humans on this planet? I don’t, but the ancient Celts, Gaels, and Norsemen all loved it! But this is not your Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather’s mead; no, it’s not. Please forget about any of your preconceived notions.
"Everything we do here is absolutely dry to the bone”, says Ricky Klein, head mead maker.
“Mead can be so many different things, there is a lot of variety. If you think you hate mead, come in and try it”, says Kelly Klein, CEO.
Here in 2015, Groennfell, which means “Green Mountains” in Old Norse, produces Mannaz, a crisp, hydromel-style mead; Valkyrie’s Choice, a higher alcohol mead; Fennberry Draught, a cranberry mead; and the Chaos Cyser, an apple/vanilla mead sold in 16oz cans. All are light bodied, dry, and delicately carbonated.
Kelly and Ricky love visitors at their Hercules Drive location (perhaps the street should be renamed Beowulf Drive?), so stop on in and see them!
