Receipts: To Print or Not to Print?

We recently updated our cash register software so that we no longer automatically print receipts for transactions. Why? We found out that while our receipts are BPA-free, they aren't recyclable. 

Doing a few calculations, it turns out that we used to use a lot of paper printing receipts. Between June 2012 to June 2013, we printed almost 245 miles of receipts. That would stretch all the way from City Market to Syracruse, NY!  If we measure the square footage, we printed 731.5 ft² of receipts. That's more than enough to cover all of Chittenden County! 

Needless to say, having the choice to print or not print receipts will help us be a little more sustainable and a little less wasteful. But don't worry, you can still ask for a copy of your receipt if you need it.
