Composting in the Cafe

As a continuation of our efforts to reduce our contribution to the waste stream and our environmental impact as a whole, City Market recently began an in-store composting effort in our Café area by providing a container dedicated for food scraps only.

According to the Chittenden Solid Waste District, food scraps and soiled paper comprise nearly 46% of landfill waste in Chittenden County. By incorporating this small measure, we are able to reduce the amount of trash we send to the landfill, limit the amount of methane gas emitted into the atmosphere and help create a useful product that enhances the quality of our soil. This effort in the Café area builds on the compost we already gather from all of our internal departments.
