Burning Fuse Film Festival: Sept. 25 to Oct. 1

“Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Oreleans” Shot before Katrina, this film is a bittersweet love letter to a city. When a newspaperman rebuilds a historic house in perhaps America’s oldest black neighborhood, his carpenter uncovers a hidden chapter of the birthplace of jazz. Executive Produced by Wynton Marsalis, Directed by Dawn Logsdon and Lolis Eric Elie. “Sliding Liberia” – California surfers head for the beach – in war-torn Liberia. Along with big waves, they find brave people, including local surfers, who must rebuild a society battered by years of civil war. Perhaps the first surf film ever to turn the cameras back dowards the beach. Director Britton Caillouette with Dan Malloy, Crystal Thornburg, Chris Del Moro and Liberia’s Alfred Lomax. “A Snow Mobile for George” – An offbeat road trip tells the stories of people who must bear the consequences of environmental de-regulation: salmon fishermen; Wyoming cowboys; and New York firemen. Alternately funny and horrifying, Bill McKibben called this film “a fitting testimony to a sick era in American politics. Directed by Todd Darling; Finalist, Best Feature Documentary, Ashland Independent Film Festival. Music by Morcheeba’s Ross Godfrey; Acey Alone
“Murder Spies and Voting Lies” – The story of Clint Curtis, a mild mannered computer engineer who finds himself caught between a vote rigging scandal and a powerful legislator. And then someone gets murdered. Features Gore Vidal, Barbara McKInney and Brad Friedman. Directed by Patty Sharaf. Winner Best Documentary, New Jersey Film Festival
“Pussycat Preacher” What is a stripper supposed to do once she’s been saved? Heather Vietch, a lapsed stripper becomes an evangelical minister, bur her Christian outreach to sex workers stirs her congregation’s prejudice and doubt. The film presents a mesmerizing, touching and at times hilarious portrait of a woman of faith. (This film contains no nudity.) Produced and Directed by Bill Day. “Soldiers of Conscience” – Eight US soldiers face the most difficult decision of their lives: to kill or not kill. Made with the cooperation of the US Army, the film takes a sharp look at war, peace, and the transformative power of human conscience.
