Grassroots Group of Americans for Sustainable USDA Meets with Secretary Vilsack

On February 24th, Food Democracy Now! met with Secretary Vilsack in his office at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and delivered the first 87,000 signatures to him with comments so he would know how many people care about these issues.

According to a Food Democracy Now! press release, Secretary Vilsack was very receptive to the voice that the sustainable agriculture community has put forward at Food Democracy Now! and all participants were encouraged with his concerns regarding the problems facing family farmers today.

In addition, Food Democracy Now! is happy to report that  Kathleen Merrigan was selected, one of their Sustainable Dozen, to become the Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. "This is an important victory for our collective grassroots efforts and an indication that President Obama and Secretary Vilsack are serious about creating real change," said Food Democracy Now! representatives.

Food Democracy Now! is a grassroots movement initiated by farmers, writers, chefs, eaters and policy advocates who recognize the profound sense of urgency in creating a new food system that is capable of meeting the changing needs of American society as it relates to food, health, animal welfare and the environment.
