City Market Becomes Smoke Free
Co-op launches program to eliminate cigarette smoking on store grounds.
City Market, downtown Burlington’s cooperative grocery store, has launched a new program to eliminate cigarette smoking by customers and staff on store property. The smoke-free zone, which started in January 1, encompasses the entire store as well as the parking lot and premises. “Since the Co-op has never sold cigarettes it seemed a positive fit with the store’s mission to provide healthy choices to consumers,” said Christopher Lyon, City Market’s Assistant Operations Manager.
The smoke free initiative began in the summer of 2007 as staff and management developed a plan to become smoke free. A committee was formed to tackle the issue and recommendations were implemented by the general manager and staff. Signage & cigarette receptacles have now been placed at all of the entrances to City Market property. In addition, the Co-op is offering smoking cessation classes and tips on practicing personal safety while off property to all store employees. The Co-op also reached out to neighboring businesses to offer information on the smoke free plan, and who to contact with any comments or questions.
