Medicinal Mushrooms Strengthen Immune System
Medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries, particularly in Chinese medicine to combat a wide array of problems such as stress, premature aging, heart disease, cancer, and viral infections. More closely related to us than they are to plants, medicinal mushrooms are powerful healers but are very gentle in nature. For example, many mushrooms have anti-cancer effects, but are so gentle that they can be taken along with modern chemotherapy, even helping to buffer the harmful side effects of the conventional drugs.
There are a plethora of mushroom varieties, each containing several unique therapeutic effects. Reishi mushrooms are known for their antioxidant protection, immune and nervous system support, and blood pressure lowering quality. Of all the mushrooms Maitake are the strongest tumor growth inhibitors. They are especially effective against hormone-driven cancers (breast and prostate). Cordyceps help to regulate cholesterol levels and are also used as performance enhancers for athletes. These are only a few of the many varieties available!
Studies show that medicinal mushrooms work best when used synergistically; their effects are enhanced when taken together. Try Grian Herbs’ Woodland Tonic, or New Chapter’s Host Defense for immunity. These mushroom blends, along with several others, can be found in our Wellness Department. Or try adding fresh maitakes and shiitakes from our Produce Department in a delicious stir-fry. To get full medicinal benefits, fresh mushrooms must be fully cooked.
