Local Motion
Local Motion is Vermont's statewide non-profit advocate for active transportation, vibrant communities, and safe streets. Local Motion's mission is to make it safe, accessible, and fun for everyone to bike, walk, and roll in Vermont! Our vision is that more people will walk, bike, and roll in Vermont for recreation and transportation. Active transportation is good for our physical and mental health, fosters a sense of community, is a powerful part of the solution to reduce fossil fuel consumption, and contributes to the economic well-being of local communities and individuals.
Today, they:
- Provide free and safe Valet Bike Parking at 60 plus events each summer encouraging people to choose a bike as a more fun, healthy and environmentally sound mode of transportation.
- Operate the Bike Ferry, an Island Line Trail link for walkers and cyclists between the greater Burlington area and the Champlain Islands.
- Operate a Trailside Center on the Burlington waterfront providing bike rentals and information to locals and visitors, generating revenue for our advocacy work, and encouraging biking for fun.
- Help communities move forward on walk/bike infrastructure and policies through technical assistance and advocacy support.
- Offer workshops for all ages to help motivate and support leaving your car behind, as part of the "Everyday Bicycling Project"
- Teach bike skills to over 7,000 children annually with Bike Smart.
- Coordinate the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program throughout Vermont.
- Offer e-bike demos across the state of Vermont.
Job Summary
Bike Ferry Dockside Ambassador
Friendly Visitor Volunteers are needed mornings and afternoons late May through mid October at the Cut on the Colchester Causeway. Greet passengers, answer questions, and collect donations for Local Motion. Visitors are often looking for trail info, maps, recommendations on where to enjoy ice cream, and details about the education and advocacy programs of Local Motion. Enjoy being outside on beautiful Lake Champlain and help us make it safe, accessible, and fun for everyone to bike, walk, and roll in Vermont.
Please allow an extra 30 minutes on either side for travel time down the Causeway. You will receive 4 volunteer hours, including the 30 minute travel time to the Cut and the 30 minute travel time returning from the Cut.

Valet Bike Parking 2024 Volunteers
You will help set up the bike parking area, greet cyclists, assist with parking their bikes, monitor the bikes, and ensure bikes are returned to their rightful owners at the end of the event. Together we will create a space that advocates for active transportation, fosters a sense of community, and is a powerful part of the solution to reduce fossil fuel consumption.
