This monthly series is a collaboration with the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program. In May, we will make three traditional dishes from Nepal. Dal Bhat is a steamed rice and cooked red lentil dish that is vegetarian and popular throughout the Indian subcontinent. We will also make a chicken curry and pickled cucumber and sesame chutney, which are often served with Dal Bhat.
Our instructors are Bijaya Serchan and Angpasi Sherpa, who are from Nepal. Bijaya came to Vermont in 1997 and has 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren. She is the owner of Serchan's Ethnic Food and sells her famous chickpea dal and potato salad in the prepared foods section at City Market. Angpasi has 4 adult children and many grandchildren. She is the mother-in-law of the owner of Sherpa Kitchen, a family-run Nepali restaurant in Burlington. Bijaya and Angpasi are excellent cooks who have passed down their knowledge of traditional Nepali cooking to their families and they are very excited to share their cooking expertise and stories in this class.
