Crop Mob with Jericho Settlers Farm
We had a beautiful Saturday for a Crop Mob with Jericho Settlers Farm. A big thank you to Christa and Diane from Jericho Settlers Farm and to all our wonderful Member Workers and volunteers who spent 3 hours with us transplanting onion starts!
Our group of 17 volunteers started up at Jericho Settlers Farm's homestead with a tour led by Diane, the CSA Coordinator. Diane showed us the greenhouse and Jericho Settlers' various hoophouses (some of which are heated underground by a biomass heater) and talked about what crops were currently being grown and the goals of the farm. Jericho Settlers Farm operates a year round CSA (community supported agriculture), as well as supplying a number of wholesale accounts (like City Market), and one of their goals is to grow as much as they can in the shoulder seasons, using tools like heated hoophouses.
After the tour, our group headed to farmland a couple miles down the road to help Christa and Diane transplant onion starts. In the three hours we worked in the field (taking breaks to enjoy infused water and snacks from the Co-op), we estimate that we planted approximately 50,000 onions! It is always amazing what a group of motivated people can achieve in just a short amount of time, and I have to say, we all felt pretty satisified with what we accomplished.
Interested in participating in our next Crop Mob? Join us in Burlington's Intervale at Pitchfork Farm on Saturday, June 4 from 9am-12pm.
