Irene's Impact: How Can I Help?

In the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, many are asking what they can do to help. While there are many ways beyond what we’ve listed here these are several resources we’ve used that have up to date information on planned events and needs for donations and volunteers:

  • As you know, City Market is donating 1% of sales from September 3 – September 16 to the Intervale Center Farmers’ Recovery Fund.
  • City Market is also donating the September proceeds of our “Change for Local Non-Profits” Program to the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund as coordinated by the state’s United Ways.
  • The Burlington Farmers’ Market will have silent auctions to raise money at the markets on September 11, 18, and 25. Funds raised will be shared between the Intervale Center Farmers’ Recovery Fund and the Vermont Irene Flood Relief Fund.
  • The Burlington Ensemble, in partnership with Champlain College, is hosting a benefit concert for the Intervale Center Farmers' Recovery Fund on Saturday, September 10 from 6-10 p.m. 100% of money raised will go to the Fund. The concert will feature internationally renowned violinist Soovin Kim (Artistic Director, Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival) and include guest artists. $10 minimum suggested donation per ticket. Please email burlington.ensemble@gmail.com for more information and to RSVP. Like Burlington Ensemble on Facebook to learn more about the event and program.
  • You can visit vtresponse.wordpress.com to find ways to help with flood relief in other regions of the state.  Their website includes all sorts of tags on the right side of the screen to find information on different regions of the state, road updates, help needed, and much more.
  • The Vermont Community Foundation and Vermont Agency of Agriculture have built the Vermont Farm Disaster Relief Fund to help farmers through the current crisis. For more information or to donate, click here: http://www.vermontcf.org/give-now
  • The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) is launching an online auction to benefit the Farmer Emergency Fund. Bidding opens on October 1.
  • Donate $10 to the Vermont Foodbank to pay for food that will go to food banks in communities most impacted by Irene. Text the word FOODNOW to 52000 to make a $10 donation that will show up on your next cellphone bill.
