'Local food is fresher,' Vermont Students Say
The importance of eating locally isn't the exclusive discussion of food gurus and farmers-market devotees any more. Some fourth- and fifth-graders in Burlington are talking about it, too.
Hundreds of elementary students came to school for supper on a chilly Thursday night to share the food they usually have for lunch with their family members. As participants in Vermont's largest farm-to-school partnership program, schools across the Burlington School District incorporate whole, fresh and local food in school menus, and children enjoy a wide variety of quality and healthy food every day.
Beside bringing local and fresh food to the schools, City Market's Outreach partner, known as the Burlington School Food Project, also incorporates nutrition education into the classroom curriculum and highlights the connection between farms, food, schools and the community.
